The Arrondissement de Ville-Marie is undergoing a consultation process for the future of Montreal’s Chinatown:
General objective: Build a common vision of development of Chinatown.
Pre-consultation — Specify the objectives and activities of the consultation process in cooperation with actors in Chinatown (Spring 2019)
Phase 1—Produce a diagnostic profile of the issues and needs of the community (July to December 2019)
The 2021–2026 Action Plan to develop Chinatown, which completes the second step of the overall consultation process, is now available.
This plan was developed in response to the concerns and needs of the Chinese and Asian communities, following a rigorous process of consultation and dialogue. It aims to revitalize, protect and sustain this emblematic neighbourhood by deploying action strategies over time, identifying collaborators and defining achievement indicators.
In concrete terms, the Ville-Marie borough and its collaborators are making sure they have the means to deploy the resources and effort required to achieve 25 action strategies. These strategies are founded on a vision that can be broadly divided into four strategic pathways:
Summary report of the needs and expectations of the community
During the Summer and Fall of 2019, six participative activities with the public as well as several meetings with a Chinatown advisory committee made up of local actors helped produce a situational diagnostic of the needs and expectations of the community.
