The city will redevelop Rue Sainte-Catherine Est between Rue Berri and Avenue De Lorimier to improve the pedestrian and commercial experience on this iconic thoroughfare.

The redevelopment will:

  • improve the level of comfort for pedestrians on a year-round basis.
  • create a more welcoming and inclusive public environment for all clienteles.
  • consolidate Rue Sainte-Catherine Est’s role and identity as a commercial and cultural destination.

As part of this redevelopment project, the city undertook a citizen participation initiative in the wake of the Forum du Village (in French); the consultation process started with community stakeholders in 2022.

As part of the gender-based analysis from an intersectional perspective (ADS+) approach, three exploratory walks were carried out on Sainte-Catherine Street East in the summer of 2023 with people who frequent the street, in particular representatives of organizations working with vulnerable populations.

The participants analysed the physical and social characteristics of the street and shared their findings, needs and issues. In total, 12 organisations and individuals took part in these activities.

The exploratory walks revealed that the street as a whole has a distinct identity, with different functions for different sections. Issues mentioned included accessibility, cleanliness and maintenance of the street; however, its commercial and tourist character is perceived as strong, and participants noted its lively atmosphere reinforces the feeling of safety.
